Firm Declaration by RTVE in Support of Laura Arroyo and Sarah Santaolalla: "We Will Not Conform"
The Management Board of RTVE, Spain's public broadcaster, has issued an unusual statement, expressing discomfort and opposition to recent episodes of harassment campaigns against its professionals and collaborators. The statement comes in response to attacks on collaborators Laura Arroyo and Sarah Santaolalla.
RTVE asserts that it finds it intolerable that collaborators are targeted with offensive and obscene disqualifications. The Corporation deems it appropriate to express opposition to discussions that involve insults, falsehoods, and personal attacks, particularly those that undermine the dignity and honor of people and violate the rule of law and coexistence.
The attacks, according to the statement, have been associated with a gender issue. RTVE fights against misogyny and machismo as one of its essential public service goals. The Corporation rejects attacks that violate the dignity and honor of people and considers the attacks on Arroyo and Santaolalla unacceptable.
The statement does not specify any particular individuals or parties involved in the harassment campaigns. However, it is suggested that the political party Vox may have given rise to the attacks. RTVE has not mentioned any specific actions they will take to prevent or address these harassment campaigns.
Despite this, RTVE's goal is to guarantee a plural, diverse, and relevant RTVE, contributing to a better understanding of reality and its contexts, providing diverse points of view, and defending democratic values. The Corporation accepts and fosters debate but insists that it must be conducted from a tolerance and respect that allows for coexistence from different positions.
RTVE does not intend to get used to or allow these attacks. It has stated that spokespeople for political parties have been the cause of the attacks, but it will not delve into the ideological or economic interests behind the campaigns. The Corporation also affirms that it will not be swayed by campaigns to discredit public radio and its collaborators.
The Council states that the comments demonstrate a degree of misogyny and machismo. RTVE, in its commitment to fostering controversy and criticism, will continue to strive for a more inclusive and respectful environment for all its collaborators. The Corporation has not yet specified any particular support or assistance they are providing to the affected professionals and collaborators.
