Fireworks Ban Unsuccessful, Reveals New Year's Report in Dusseldorf
Düsseldorf's New Year's Eve celebrations this year saw a mix of joyous festivities and challenges for the city's authorities. A first aid station was set up at the Burgplatz by local aid organisations, providing assistance to those in need.
The police and public order services had a busy night, with 148 people found in possession of banned fireworks, a significant increase from last year. Despite the increased presence of authorities, many people managed to circumvent the fireworks ban due to the lack of control points, making enforcement difficult.
The authorities took eight people into custody, a decrease from last year, for various offences related to the fireworks ban. One juvenile was among those taken into custody by the public order office, and a special suspect was arrested in the Old Town for involvement in the destruction of several patrol cars in Derendorf.
In Derendorf, a suspect was arrested for damaging several patrol cars, adding to the list of incidents involving fireworks. Unknown persons shot fireworks at deployed forces during an extinguishing operation, injuring one member. Thankfully, two patients were the only ones treated at the first aid station, neither of whom had to be transported to a hospital.
The number of public urinators caught by OSD was 21, a significant decrease from last year, suggesting improved behaviour in this area. However, the number of juveniles found with tobacco and alcohol by OSD increased from last year, with 23 juveniles found this year compared to 19 last year.
The police issued 74 dispersal orders, a decrease from last year, and resistance during public order measures occurred only once, compared to two last year. Verbal violence was directed at deployed forces from the fire department and rescue service two times, a decrease from last year's four.
Despite the ban on setting off fireworks before New Year's Eve, it was frequently ignored. Nevertheless, a total of 2,539 fireworks were seized and destroyed, an increase from last year.
The authorities faced challenges in maintaining order, with one incident of resistance during public order measures. However, overall, the number of incidents was lower than last year, with a decrease in the number of people taken into custody and the number of dispersal orders issued.
While the New Year's Eve celebrations in Düsseldorf this year presented challenges for the authorities, the city managed to maintain a relatively peaceful and safe environment for its residents and visitors.
