Zabaykalsky Krai Under Siege from Wildfires

It's a battle like no other in Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia. firefighting forces are battling blazes, with 1389 personnel and 123 units of equipment currently engaged in the effort, according to official reports.

This dynamic team is made up of various elements: 370 personnel from the Zabaykalsky Leshoz Forestry Enterprise, 269 from the Chita Airbase, 23 from the Forest Guard, 697 from the interregional maneuvering forces, and even 30 from other forces.

As of 7:00 PM on April 23, the fires have taken a significant toll, with seven fires extinguished and another four contained. These incidents collectively cover an area of over 21,600 hectares in various districts like Gazimuro-Zavodsky, Mogochinsky, Nerchinsky, Nerchinsko-Zavodsky, and Chita districts, as well as Sretensky district.

Currently, there are 36 active fires in districts such as Mogochinsky, Baleysky, Tungokochensky, Chita districts, and Sretensky, Karýmsky, Chernyshevsky, Shilkinsky districts, covering a staggering 178,000 hectares. Most of these fires, approximately 125,000 hectares, are located in Tungokochensky district.

Earlier reports had raised concerns about insufficient funds for wildfire prevention in Zabaykalsky Krai. These concerns were heightened as it was revealed that the area of forest fires in the region had exceeded last year's figures by almost 19 times[1].

The wildfires in Zabaykalsky Krai are part of a larger trend affecting the Siberian and Far East regions of Russia[2][3]. The situation remains critical, with ongoing efforts to control the spread of fires.
