Fires erupt in Rostov region, Russia, following Ukraine's drone strike
In the early hours of August 6, 2025, the southern Russian region of Rostov was hit by a series of drone attacks. The attacks targeted a power substation, causing fires and significant disruption to the energy infrastructure.
According to Rostov's acting governor, Yuri Slyusar, who shared the information on the Telegram messaging app, the fire at the power substation was extinguished. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the attack.
The Rostov region has been a frequent target of Ukraine's strikes, with the ongoing conflict leading to significant damage to the energy infrastructure. The attack on the power substation is not an isolated incident, as Ukrainian drones have also targeted critical logistics and energy facilities in the region.
The Russian defense ministry reported the destruction of 24 drones overnight, including 7 over the Rostov region. However, the ministry only reports the number of downed drones, not the number launched by Ukraine. Reuters could not independently verify the reports of the drone attack in Rostov.
Ukraine has stated that its attacks inside Russia are aimed at destroying infrastructure crucial to Moscow's war efforts. The attacks are in response to Russia's continued strikes on Ukraine. There was no immediate comment from Kyiv regarding the drone attack in Rostov.
The ongoing conflict has inflicted operational disruption on Rostov’s energy-related infrastructure through direct attacks on railway logistics critical for energy and military supply chains. This has impaired fuel transport and logistical support functions essential to Russia's war effort in the region.
While the exact impact of the attack on the power substation is still being assessed, it is clear that the conflict has had a significant impact on the energy infrastructure in Russia's Rostov region. The region serves as a crucial supply artery, and any disruption to its energy infrastructure can have far-reaching consequences.
