Firefighting drills for businesses taking place at the Firefighting Institute in Düren-Stockheim
On a significant day in June 2025, the Volunteer Fire Department Mechernich (VFD Mechernich) organised a training day at the Feuerwehrhaus Mechernich station, with a focus on enhancing leadership, communication, and documentation skills.
The training session was a planned event, carefully designed to simulate various scenarios that firefighters might encounter in the line of duty. These scenarios included a building fire in an apartment complex, a leaking gas tank, a traffic accident involving a car and a truck, and a fire on a campsite.
The training day was not a routine operation for the VFD Mechernich. Instead, it was a selective event, with a small group of 16 participants taking part. The exercises aimed to provide practical demonstrations of tactical ventilation, hose management, and improved documentation at the scene of an incident.
The VFD Mechernich did not conduct this training day at their home station. Instead, they travelled to the Institute of Firefighting North Rhine-Westphalia in Düren-Stockheim for the session. The training day at the Kommern fire station was also a part of the schedule, serving as another venue for the practical exercises.
The purpose of these training exercises was multifaceted. In addition to improving the leadership behaviour of group and station leaders, they aimed to enhance communication between leadership levels. This focus on teamwork and communication is crucial in ensuring the safety and efficiency of the fire department's operations.
The training day proved to be a valuable experience for the participants, offering them the opportunity to practice and refine their skills in a controlled environment.
