Firefighters Undergo Training in Pirna

At the main fire station in Pirna, over 100 firefighters gathered for a crucial training session on Thursday. The training aimed to prepare them for handling chemical incidents effectively, simulating a real-life scenario involving a leaking tanker truck.

The firefighters donned orange protective suits, known as chemical protection suits, as they embarked on this important exercise. The training provided an opportunity for them to practice their skills and strategies in a controlled environment, bridging the time until specialist companies arrive.

The training scenario was meticulously designed to replicate a chemical incident. The firefighters were tasked with containing and pumping back the liquid from a leaking tanker truck, a challenging yet vital task in such situations.

Firefighters commonly train for chemical incident scenarios, focusing on identifying hazardous materials, containing spills or leaks, and protecting life and property through systematic response techniques. In this training, they learned to recognise container types, assess hazards, implement containment methods such as diking or damming the spill, and apply appropriate decontamination and evacuation procedures.

Containment techniques taught in the training emphasised controlling the spread of hazardous chemicals using physical barriers (dikes, absorbents), neutralisation when applicable, and using protective gear to safely access and stop leaks. The training also stressed coordination with medical and environmental teams to manage exposure risks and cleanup.

In addition to hands-on and classroom instruction, virtual simulation platforms are increasingly used to replicate complex, high-risk environments, such as chemical leaks from tanker trucks. This scalable and repeatable training supports preparedness for the unpredictable nature of chemical emergencies.
