Firefighters rescue freezing dog from Iowa’s icy Lake Manawa
A German shorthaired pointer was pulled from the icy waters of Lake Manawa in Iowa after falling through the surface. Firefighters from Council Bluffs stepped in to save the struggling animal on Thursday. The dog is now recovering after suffering from hypothermia.
The rescue unfolded when the dog was spotted in distress on the frozen lake. Council Bluffs Fire Department crews used a boat to reach the animal and bring it safely to shore. Once ashore, the dog showed signs of hypothermia but began responding well to immediate care.
The Midlands Humane Society took custody of the dog after the rescue. Staff are currently waiting for an owner to come forward and claim it. As the dog is not microchipped, identifying its owner may prove more difficult.
Anyone with information about the dog can contact the Midlands Humane Society at 712-328-4656. If no owner is located, the organization plans to make the dog available for adoption once it has fully recovered from surgery.
The dog remains under the care of the Midlands Humane Society while recovery continues. Authorities have not yet confirmed the owner’s identity, leaving the next steps uncertain. For now, the focus stays on the animal’s health and potential rehoming if unclaimed.
