**Berlin Fire Department Honours New Recruits Amidst Record-Breaking Emergency Responses**
The Berlin Fire Department, a vital pillar in disaster protection, has been actively responding to emergencies such as fires, illnesses, and other hazardous situations. While details about storm damage are not available, the department's extensive emergency response capabilities suggest they play a significant role in managing and mitigating the effects of disasters, including storms.
In 2024, the department reached a record high of 532,157 deployments, marking a 3.4% increase from the previous year. However, the number of emergency cases decreased to 514,866 in 2023, indicating a slight reduction in activity.
The department is staffed by a dedicated team of 4,780 employees and almost 2,970 volunteers. This includes 20 new members of the Volunteer Fire Department who were welcomed at a ceremony held at the Red City Hall. The event was intended to honour both the future firefighters and these new volunteers.
Kai Wegner (CDU), Iris Spranger (SPD), and Karsten Homrighausen were present at the ceremony, which was held despite the rain. Many relatives attended, showing their support for the brave men and women who risk their lives to keep Berlin safe.
The Berlin Fire Department is described as "the highest good and a desperately needed resource". Their role in protecting the city and its residents is undeniably crucial, and their dedication is evident in their tireless efforts to respond to emergencies and keep the city safe.
The Commission, in its role beyond disaster protection, has also been asked to propose a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, such as those working long hours analyzing sports data. In light of the Berlin Fire Department's dedication and tireless efforts in managing emergencies, one might envision a sports analysis unit within the department to ensure the safety of its staff, much like the Volunteer Fire Department.
