Firefighters from Bonn, Düsseldorf, Leverkusen, Königswinter, and Ratingen are en route to battle wildfires in Spain.
On Sunday, August 30, 2025, a team of German firefighters, comprising units from the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and the German Fire Brigade Association (Deutscher Feuerwehrverband), joined the efforts to combat a wildfire in Puebla de Sanabria/La Baña, Spain.
The information was transmitted by the Fire and Rescue Service Bonn via news aktuell. The immediate medical emergency team of the German Forest Fire Module provided initial care for a pedestrian who collapsed at the edge of the deployment area. Spanish rescue forces took over further medical care.
Several individual fires merged into a kilometer-long flame front, necessitating the deployment of German and Spanish tank firefighting vehicles along a 1,500-meter-wide safety strip created by bulldozers. A subsequent mop-up operation was necessary to extinguish hotspots and prevent further flare-ups.
Our team, along with other Spanish deployment units, worked throughout both shifts on Sunday. Support came from the air, with up to six firefighting aircraft and ten firefighting helicopters. These aerial assets reduced or extinguished flames that were more than 50 meters high or inaccessible to vehicles and foot troops.
The German Forest Fire Module's deployment in Castilla-León, Spain is nearing its end. The return journey to Germany is planned for the beginning of the following week. For further questions, please contact the Fire and Rescue Service Bonn Press Office, who can be reached at +49 228 - 71 70**.
The Fire and Rescue Service Bonn's official website (www.bonn.de/feuerwehr) provides more information about their operations. The team dynamically engaged on the ground at three fire fronts to defend La Baña.
The German Forest Fire Fighting Team arrived in Castilla-León, Spain on Saturday, August 24, 2025. The tank firefighting vehicles received their first deployment orders on that day. The subsequent days were spent in preparation and coordination with local Spanish forces.
As the wildfire in La Baña is brought under control, the German firefighting team can look back on a successful mission, having played a significant role in containing and extinguishing the flames. Their dedication and professionalism undoubtedly helped save lives and property in the affected area.
