Firefighter championship controversy: Association's distance strategy unveiled

The 2023 German Firefighters' Championships, currently underway in Torgau, have been overshadowed by a controversy at the opening ceremony. According to reports from Leipziger Volkszeitung and Sächsische Zeitung, the first verse of the "Song of the Germans" was played instead of the official national anthem.

The "Song of the Germans," written in 1841, originally had three verses. However, due to its misuse during the Nazi era, only the third verse is officially sung today. The inappropriate playing of the first verse, which is closely associated with Nazi-era propaganda and far-right extremism, has sparked a national scandal.

The use of the controversial verse at a national event involving over 600 firefighters has been widely condemned. Hermann Schreck, Vice President of the German Fire Service Association, has strongly repudiated this act and clarified the association’s stance on democratic values. The German Fire Service Association immediately removed the person responsible from their honorary functions.

The championships, which began on Thursday, include various disciplines such as a 100-meter obstacle run and a "wet extinguishing attack." The top three women's and men's teams will qualify for the international competitions of the World Firefighters' Association. With over 600 participants, the championships promise intense competition and exciting events.

Despite the controversy, the German Fire Service Association has emphasized that ideas incompatible with democracy have no place in their ranks. The incident has caused significant public disapproval and has been widely reported in the media. The championships continue, with the focus now shifting towards the competitive events and the pursuit of excellence in firefighting.
