Fire volunteer perishes in mishap following exhausting battle against forest flames

KHUEN HONG - A devoted volunteer, who spent his day battling relentless wildfires, tragically met his end when his motorcycle plummeted off a hill road late Sunday night.

Meet Manit Sawansu, a 62-year-old stalwart volunteer ranger with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation. This dedicated soul spent his day in the heart of Khun Khan National Park, bravely fighting the fiery wrath in Samoeng district.

Manit was one among the 26 tireless warriors waging the flaming war near Kong Khak Luang village, in the tambon Samoeng Tai, from 1:30 PM until roughly 8 PM on Sunday, as revealed by Khun Khan National Park's chief, Mr. Thaweewat Daengmanee, on Monday.

As the day's heroic efforts came to an end, Manit, possibly drained from the day's exhausting toil, lost control of his motorcycle on the winding hill road, causing it to veer off the side and crash two meters down the slope. Other returning colleagues discovered his body and his bike in this harrowing condition around 8:30 PM, according to Mr. Thaweewat.

With age inevitably catching up, exhaustion might have played a significant role in this unfortunate incident. Manit's body was transferred to Samoeng Hospital for a postmortem examination to understand the exact cause of his demise.

"This is another heart-wrenching loss, a selfless soul who gave his life in the pursuit of preserving the nation's natural resources," expressed Mr. Thaweewat.
