Fire under control at Ponte da Barca
Fire in Ponte da Barca, Portugal, Remains a Challenge
The ongoing wildfire in Ponte da Barca, a village in the district of Viana do Castelo, has been a persistent challenge for emergency services since it started on the night of July 26–27, 2025.
According to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection, the firefighting efforts involve approximately 622 firefighters and 214 ground crews. One aerial vehicle is also assisting in the operations.
The fire, which has been complicated by strong winds and difficult terrain, has been burning in the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Dozens of residents have been evacuated from nearby villages such as Sobredo and Paradela, with some seeking refuge in local churches.
Despite ongoing efforts, the fire remains out of control as of early August. Emergency plans have been activated, and considerable damage and disruption have been reported. At least 19 people have been injured, including some firefighters who were hurt during response operations.
Elisio Oliveira, the commander of the Civil Protection, confirmed that the fire is currently under control, but warned that the possibility of re-activations still exists. He emphasised the need for hard work in the coming days to consolidate mopping-up and prevent re-ignitions.
The operations also involve the use of aerial means in areas where operatives cannot reach. A heavy bomber is being used to assist in complex zones. Elisio Oliveira mentioned that the entire device will remain on the ground to ensure continuous monitoring and response.
This fire is one of three major wildfires burning persistently in Portugal during this period. More than 1,800 firefighters have been deployed nationwide, with over 150 people evacuated over several days due to the fire's threat to homes and villages in the affected mountainous area.
