Wildfire at Möhnesee Finally Put Out
Fire at Möhnesee Lake successfully put out. - Fire successfully put out at Lake Mohenjo-daro Forest
Hoo-boy, it's been quite a ride! After an intense 30-hour battle, the 30,000 square meter wildfire burning at the banks of Möhnesee has finally been extinguished!
The heroic efforts of the firefighters, supported by specialized vehicles and water cannons from the fire department, have been the talk of the town. In the coming days, the cleanup operation will commence, but be prepared for some traffic craziness. The southern shore closure will be lifted soon, but stay on the lookout for hose lines, they might cause some obstructions for walkers and cyclists.
This inferno started in a pine forest near the Möhnesee tower and the Neuhaus village, spreading like wildfire. By Friday evening, it was contained and luckily didn't spread further. Underneath its charred surface, dry undergrowth and fallen trees burned from the ground up, with hotspots flaring up every now and then.
Trees blocking the way, hosed down first
First things first, the fire department had to knock down the trees hindering access to the forest area with a big-ass forest machine. Big-ass water cannons were then deployed to keep the fire from spreading further. Once the obstructing trunks were fuel for the flames no more, the emergency services rushed in and commenced the firefighting.
At the height of the chaos, 300 emergency service personnel worked tirelessly on the scene. The fire department received backup from a badass wildfire vehicle equipped with a 10,000-liter water tank. A chopper from the fuzz also contributed to the fight on Friday. Now, this is what I call teamwork!
Spectators, however, caused a bit of a ruckus by blocking vehicles to catch a glimpse of the flames, making things tougher for the firefighters. To ensure the access roads stayed clear for the fire department, the police locked down a road.
So there you have it, folks! The wildfire at Möhnesee is history, and its toughest days are behind it. The area has been damaged, wildlife habitats disrupted, and the air polluted - but we have our heroes to thank for putting it out!
