News Article: Cordoba's Mosque-Cathedral Prepares for Recovery After Fire Incident

The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba is taking steps to safeguard its treasured artifacts following a fire incident that occurred last Friday. The Cathedral Chapter has announced plans to move materials and utensils from a damaged chapel to two external dependencies on Encarnación Street.

The Chapel, which served as a warehouse and was the focus of the fire, is known to have a large amount of wooden beams and was never visitable, hidden behind a large curtain. The fire, it seems, had been smouldering for some time before it was discovered.

In an effort to protect the valuable materials during this transition, the Cathedral Chapter is adapting the dependencies to accommodate the transfer of the materials and utensils, including cleaning equipment, machines, and chairs.

To further enhance the fire safety measures, the Cathedral Chapter had already contracted a company for the installation of a nebulized water system, similar to the one in the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. This system is designed to extinguish fire without putting too much weight on materials like the wooden beams.

The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba is well-equipped to respond to such incidents. It has 19 of its own roof hydrants, four exterior arquetas hydrants, and three interior ones. In addition, it houses 5 CO2 extinguishers, 76 of chemical ABC powder, 186 optical thermometers, 78 optical barrier detectors, and 49 cable sensor detectors.

The Self-Protection Plan of the Mosque-Cathedral, updated in 2019, includes detailed locations of potential risk elements. The plan also includes various attached plans of the entire Mosque, including one with "risky areas". The chapel that was burned was among these areas.

The Scientific Police is currently investigating the official causes of the fire. The Chapel of the Annunciation, where the fire occurred, was damaged, causing minor fires in the Holy Spirit and San Nicolás de Bari chapels, and collapsing the dome of the Annunciation chapel.

It is worth noting that the Cathedral Chapter purchased the dependencies on Encarnación Street prior to the incident. The transfer of materials is expected to occur in the coming weeks.

Francisco Poyato, a native of Cordoba, is likely overseeing these recovery efforts. For the most accurate and up-to-date status, consulting official communications from the Cathedral Chapter or local cultural heritage authorities would be recommended.
