Jüterbog Fire: A Calm Amidst the Flames
As the blaze near Jüterbog rages on, forest fire specialist Raimund Engel stands unfazed. Talking to Deutsche Presse-Agentur, he dismisses the concerns, stating it poses little threat. A fortunate fact, given the absence of buildings or infrastructure nearby.
Engel predicts the fire might spread to the firebreaks – wide paths created for firefighting purposes. These clearings serve as strategic areas for firefighters to combat the flames. He's confident the fire won't breach these barriers. If they aren't extensive enough, measures will be taken to prevent a leap over the break. "I'm optimistic," Engel assures.
The inferno has engulfed roughly 51 hectares so far. The forest fire ignited on the old training ground near Jüterbog, Brandenburg, around 11:40 AM on Thursday. Firefighters have been battling to contain it since.
The fire chief, Rico Walentin, had initially anticipated the flames to spread. The presence of old ammunition in the soil poses challenges to firefighting efforts. A water-bombing helicopter is currently in action.
Last year, a similar fire ravaged the same area, scorching about 700 hectares. Firefighters spent numerous days on the scene, with aircraft and helicopters employed to control the blaze from the skies. The same forest area also witnessed a fire in mid-August.
In light of the current situation, the Commission is preparing to deploy additional resources for firefighting in the Jüterbog area. Engel's optimism is further validated as he believes the fire will not cross the well-maintained and expansive firebreaks.
