Fire in Sochi following Ukrainian drone assault
In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, a Ukrainian drone strike hit the Sochi oil depot in the Russian Black Sea resort, causing a major fire near the airport on August 3, 2025.
The attack, which targeted Russia's military logistics in the rear, including fuel depots, ammunition depots, and transportation routes, is part of Ukraine's broader strategy to undermine Russia's war effort by hitting critical industrial and energy facilities deeper inside Russian territory than typical frontline areas.
The Sochi oil depot fire, which was caused by debris from a downed drone that fell into a tank farm, led to the deployment of over 120 firefighters and the temporary suspension of flights at Sochi International Airport to ensure air safety. The city, known for its resort status and as the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics, had been less frequently targeted, making this strike a notable escalation.
Residents shared videos of the massive fire on social media, including footage of a drone approaching before the explosion and destroyed buildings. However, the authenticity of these videos could not be independently verified.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported shooting down over 90 Ukrainian drones in the Black Sea region and other areas, but the list provided did not mention any damages or casualties from the downed drones. Ukrainian media widely reported on the fire in Sochi, and the Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly stated its intention to bring the war back to the aggressor's country in the more than three-year-long Russian invasion.
Simultaneously, there were reciprocal attacks and numerous drone interceptions by both sides, highlighting how this incident fits within a broader pattern of mutual striking and counterstriking. The targets of the drone strikes are not limited to the Black Sea region.
The city of Sochi, currently in peak tourist season, was not immediately affected by the incident, as the airport temporarily suspended air traffic due to the drone threat overnight but resumed in the morning. Governor Benjamin Kondratyev reported the incident on Telegram.
Elsewhere, there were no immediate reports of accidents in Stuttgart-Feuerbach or Leinfelden-Echterdingen, and the weather in Baden-Württemberg is expected to have plenty of sunshine not until Wednesday, with rain persisting.
