Get the scoop on the recent wildfire at Möhnesee and what's next for cleanup efforts!

After more than 30 hours of relentless battle, the 30,000 square meter wildfire at Möhnesee has finally been extinguished. The emergency services, aided by water cannons, special vehicles, and even a police helicopter, fought tirelessly to put out the flames, as reported by the local fire department.

In the coming days, cleanup operations will commence, with temporary traffic disruptions anticipated. However, the closure of the southern shore will be lifted soon. Pedestrians and cyclists should be mindful of hose lines and other obstructions remaining in the forest from the firefighting efforts.

A fire ignited in a pine forest near the Möhnesee tower and rapidly spread. By Friday evening, it had been contained and has not spread since. The fire had dug its roots deep into the ground, burning dry undergrowth and numerous fallen trees, occasionally flaring up as hotspots.

Initially, the damaged trees hindered the fire department's access to the forest area. Large water guns were used to curb the fire's progress until the fallen trees were felled with a large forest machine, allowing the emergency services to enter and initiate the actual firefighting. At one point, over 300 emergency personnel were onsite.

Historically, there are no major, widely reported wildfire incidents specific to Möhnesee. However, the local fire department and emergency services have dealt with smaller-scale vegetation fires. When wildfires occur, emergency services employ common response tactics:

  • Rapid Deployment: Quick response to initial reports is crucial in preventing the fire from spreading.
  • Aerial Support: Helicopters or small aircraft may be used for water drops, but this is more common for larger or inaccessible fires.
  • Cooperative Response: Coordination between local fire departments, forestry agencies, and sometimes neighboring municipalities or state resources is essential.
  • Logistical Support: Water extraction points are set up from the Möhnesee reservoir itself, a significant local water source.
