Fire in Canyon: Designated evacuation areas, road blockades, and temporary shelters established
The Canyon Fire, which started on August 7, 2025, near Holser Canyon Road northeast of Piru, has spread eastward into Los Angeles County, affecting areas around Piru, Castaic, Hasley Canyon, Val Verde, and Hathaway Ranch. As of August 10, the fire has burned over 5,370 acres and is 75% contained.
Evacuation orders and warnings have been extensive due to the fire's rapid growth and dangerous conditions. Mandatory evacuation orders include the Lake Piru Recreation Area, the community of Piru, Camulos, Val Verde, Hasley Canyon, and areas west of Castaic. Shelters have been established for affected residents. An evacuation center is open at the East Gymnasium of the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita. Large animals can be evacuated to Pierce College in Woodland Hills, while small animals can be taken to the Castaic Animal Care Center or the Agoura Animal Shelter. The closest parking lots for the evacuation shelter are Lots 5, 6, and 7.
Closures include the Castaic Library due to the fire evacuation. Evacuation warnings are affecting areas roughly east of the county line, north of Highway 126, and south of Romero Canyon Road in L.A. County. Areas west of Interstate 5, north of Highway 126 are no longer under evacuation warnings. Evacuation warnings are affecting areas east of the community of Piru (east of Center Street and Highway 126 to the L.A. County line) in Ventura County. Evacuation warnings affecting areas north of Lake Piru have been lifted on Friday.
The fire is threatening areas around Piru and Castaic along the Ventura-Los Angeles county line. Firefighting efforts involve hundreds of personnel from Ventura and LA counties, helicopters, and air tankers. Residents are advised to follow evacuation orders and monitor official emergency information sites. Air quality warnings have been issued due to smoke impact.
