Wildfires Rage Across Castile and León, Spain

A series of wildfires are currently ravaging Castile and León, a region in northwestern Spain, affecting over 25 locations and displacing thousands of residents. As of August 17, 2025, approximately 3,250 people remain displaced due to the fires[1][3].

The provinces of León and Zamora have been hit hardest by the wildfires. Ponferrada, a town in León, is one of the areas heavily affected by the fires and evacuations[3]. Small towns and villages such as Almazcara, Villaverde de los Cestos, Yeres, Llamas de Cabrera, San Bartolomé de Pinares, Molezuelas de la Carballeda, and Resoba, also fall within the affected provinces[1][3].

One of the most recent fires started in Resoba, part of Cervera del Pisuerga, and was raised to Level 1 on the Fire Severity Index at 15:00. Flames have since spread towards Almazcara[1]. The fire in Villaverde de los Cestos remains at Level 2 on the Fire Severity Index, with no current impact on train tracks, as stated by the Junta's delegate, Eduardo Diego[1]. The fires in Yeres, Llamas de Cabrera (both in León), and San Bartolomé de Pinares (in Ávila) also remain at Level 2[1].

The fires have caused destruction in the affected areas, burning rural land, private gardens, and equipment sheds. The N-6 road was initially closed due to the fire in Villaverde de los Cestos, but has since reopened to traffic[1].

Unfortunately, a local resident was hospitalized after burning themselves while trying to put out the fire, and other people received treatment for smoke inhalation[1]. A member of the operation team also suffered minor burns on the hand and face during extinguishing efforts[1].

Firefighting efforts in Castile and León include the deployment of the Spanish Military Emergency Unit (UME), support from EU aircraft, and coordination by national and regional authorities. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is scheduled to visit the hardest-hit areas, including León province, to coordinate response efforts[1][2].

Emergency measures remain in place, such as road closures and advisories for residents to stay indoors or evacuate as needed. The nearby regions of Galicia, Asturias, and Extremadura are also battling significant fires, complicating the national response[1][2].

In an effort to combat the wildfire crisis, the authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and follow all safety instructions. Updates on the situation will be provided as more information becomes available.
