Fire Department Mainz's Annual New Year's Eve Swim: Scaled-Down Fun Over a Shorter Distance
Mainz Fire Department Hosts Successful 51st Annual New Year's Day Swim
The Mainz Fire Department held its 51st annual New Year's Day swim this morning, with around 200 swimmers and 400 spectators braving the chilly 13°C waters of the Rhine.
Despite a change in the route due to the unavailability of the fire-fighting boat, the event was a success in 2023. Instead of starting from their usual location, participants began from the Kaiser Tor stairs this year.
Several rescue boats were present to ensure the safety of the swimmers, and the water rescue capabilities of the Mainz Fire Department were on full display. The event also served as an opportunity to foster contacts with other water rescue organizations.
Notable political and societal figures were present on the riverbank. Mayor Nino Haase gave the starting signal at 10 a.m. and also participated in the swim. Mr. Stefan Behrendt, Inspector of Fire and Disaster Protection of the city of Mainz, was also present.
The swim included participants from various fire departments, emergency police, water police, Bundeswehr, state fire and disaster protection academy, local branches of DLRG and THW, private diving clubs, and city of Mainz politics and administration employees. Some participants wore creative costumes or used floating accessories to add a festive touch to the event.
The proceeds from the accompanying donation campaign will be donated to the "Early Start e.V." association in Mainz this year. The association supports premature babies, sick newborns, and at-risk children in the city.
The Mainz Fire Department wishes all citizens a safe slide into the new year and all the best for 2025. The event ended in a cozy atmosphere in the Rheingoldhalle, where Mayor Nino Haase and Mr. Stefan Behrendt were also present.
