Firefighters Bring Smiles to UKE Children's Hospital Patients on St. Nicholas Day
On December 6th, Santa Claus-clad and superhero-suited firefighters descended from the rooftops of Hamburg-Eppendorf University Hospital (UKE) to put a smile on the faces of their young patients. Organized by the fire department's social services team, these high-altitude rescuers brought a much-needed break from hospital routine for more than 50 young patients, according to the fire department's press release.
Across Germany, over 50 fire departments, THW, and mountain rescue units took part in this nationwide campaign, bringing joy to children at various hospitals, including UKE.
Fire Department and UKE Collaboration
The fire department's social services team has a long-standing history of working with UKE to support families with children in need. In previous years, the department's holiday festivities included gift distribution and visitations.
Firefighters' Community Engagement
Beyond their life-saving duties, the fire department actively participates in education and community initiatives, focusing on fire safety and first aid.
Prompted by the success of their collaborative visit to the children's hospital, several other hospitals in Hamburg — including UKE — approached the department to organize similar events.
In the spirit of health and wellness promotion, the fire department and several Hamburg hospitals plan to host a series of events for children, including interactive fire safety workshops and fitness activities.

While specific international traditions of fire departments visiting children's hospitals are not detailed, Verona's Fire Brigade sets a shining example. In Verona, Italy, about 45 firefighters engage in thrilling demonstrations, visitation, and gift distribution. Their initiatives aim to lift the spirits of young patients, providing a brief respite from their daily routines.
