Breaking Record in Incarceration

Hamburg - The record-breaking prison inmate Frank W., aged 63, has been a resident of Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel Prison, nicknamed "Santa Fu," for an astonishing 40 years. No other inmate has matched this lengthy tenure. This double murderer received his two life sentences for two cold-blooded killings in 1982 and 1994, both driven by his insatiable greed.

Though he had hoped to leave prison soon, fate had other plans. On a recent Thursday, his dreams of freedom were crushed as he was yet again convicted – this time for drug possession within the prison walls.

Greed, Consumed by Substance Abuse

The case, which appeared trivial on the surface, sent shockwaves through the courts. Public prosecutors accused Frank W. of buying around 30 grams of hashish twice at a price of 150 euros within the prison. However, the notorious killer refused a swift trial with a small fine, choosing instead to remain tight-lipped. A confession was never an option for him.

A Brief Look Back into the Past

Rewind four decades, and a different picture emerges. At just 22 years old, Frank W. committed his first murder in the then-East Germany, strangling an acquaintance in Eilsleben (Saxony-Anhalt) in October 1982. The motive: greed.

After the crime, W. fled across the inner-German border and was shot by automatic weapons. However, a legal struggle ensued between the courts and East German institutions, eventually leading to his conviction in Hamburg. Since then, W. has served his life sentence in Fuhlsbüttel prison.

A Strange Twist of Fate (1994)

Fate dealt another devastating blow to a fellow inmate, Dieter J., aged 51, nicknamed “Goldfinger,” in 1994. W., along with an accomplice, threw a prostitute from the 4th floor. The victim, Goldfinger, was in preventive detention at the time. Goldfinger reportedly lent money within prison at exorbitant interest rates. His death sentence sealed their tragic end.

A Fine for a Killer

Years later, in 2023, Frank W. stood trial for drug possession within the prison. He boldly accused the prosecution witness, Jason B., aged 26, of being a fraud, claiming that the testimony about the "weed" was false.

Contrary to W.'s claims, the judge saw it differently: “Inconsistencies in the witness’ testimony cannot disprove the original statements and corroborating evidence. It is not all fabricated.”

The New Verdict, a Setback for the Double Murderer

For the double murderer, the hashish trial resulted in a significant setback. The Hamburg court imposed a daily fine of 2 euros for 220 days, totaling 440 euros. This fine could negatively impact his planned transfer to an open prison facility.

According to prison management, W. had been making progress since 2022 and was deemed capable of adapting to life outside of prison. The new sentence has put an end to these rewards.

W.'s Final Plea for Freedom

In court on Thursday, W. expressed his wish to leave prison and live the remaining years in freedom, reestablishing contact with his cousin and second daughter. However, his hopes may not bear fruit anytime soon.
