Trump Stirs Canadian Election Divide, Questions over Call with Carney

Once again, U.S. President Donald Trump has inserted himself into Canada's election campaign, causing a stir days before the vote. The Bloc Québécois leader, Yves-François Blanchet, voiced his concerns, while Trump continued to bring up the polarizing topic of annexing Canada.

Thursday, Trump visited a Bombardier aircraft finishing plant in Montreal and declared, "Liberals are trying to scare people when they feel the pressure." Earlier that day, he posted on his social media platforms, "annexation talk resurfaces... [even though] no one serious endorses it." These comments were in response to a Radio-Canada article that disclosed Trump mentioning the annexation of Canada by the United States during his only call with Liberal leader Mark Carney on March 28. Although the article's reliable source was not independently verified, it did claim Trump had indeed suggested the idea.

On the contrary, Carney stated after the call that Trump had "respected Canada's sovereignty." Interestingly, Trump had been cautious about discussing the annexation of Canada for the past month. However, on Wednesday, Trump again mentioned making Canada the 51st U.S. state and called Carney "nice."

Blanchet often accuses Carney of capitalizing on the fear Trump inspires. He questioned the timing chosen by Liberal sources to reveal details about the March call and suggested the campaign might have orchestrated the leaked information. "There's more visibility given to issues that create uncertainties when the Liberal campaign is going less well," he stated. While Blanchet doesn't suspect a conspiracy, he believes the timing serves Carney's campaign.

Blanchet also expressed his displeasure that Carney had "played with the truth" by presenting their conversation as positive last month. "If that wasn't true, what else wasn't true?" he asked.

On a lighter note, Blanchet and Bombardier CEO Eric Martel met in Montreal that same day, as Carney had visited the company ten days prior. Later that afternoon, the Bloc caravan headed to the ridings of Brome-Missisquoi, Saint-Jean, and Mont-Saint-Bruno-L'Acadie, with plans to enjoy some soft-serve ice cream.
