Doc Committee Bids Adieu to Documenta 2027 Amid Controversy
The 2027 Documenta artistic direction selection committee has hit the exit, with the remaining four members tossing in the towel after a tumultuous period of accusations and resignations. On Thursday evening, the committee officially handed in their resignations, as reported by Documenta gGmbh, the organization behind the world art exhibition in Kassel.
First to jump ship was the Indian writer and curator Ranjit Hoskoté, who had earlier faced accusations of anti-Semitism. Israeli artist Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger followed suit, reportedly due to the current situation in the Middle East, making her resignation official on Monday.
The departure of these two members marks the end for a six-member search committee, whose goal was to recommend a curator or collective for the next edition of Documenta due in 2027. As a result, the entire search process has now been given a fresh start.
Despite the turmoil, Documenta's value as an influential art exhibition platform across art history remains undeterred, hinting at its durability amid conflicts and societal challenges. The forthcoming editions are poised to present a new perspective, with a new committee set to assume the reins.
