Financial Crimes Enforcement Agency (EFCC) Set to Charge VeryDarkMan in Court Based on Multiple Complaints

In a surprising turn of events, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) nabbed social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, better known by his alias VeryDarkMan (VDM). The dramatic arrest went down at a bank on Friday, May 2, 20225, following complaints lodged against him by several petitioners.

According to reports on our website, VDM was with his mother visiting GTBank when he expressed concerns about an alleged account deduction. However, the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, in an interview with BBC News Pidgin on Monday, May 5, 2025, clarified that the agency was responding to a series of allegations raised against VDM by various petitioners.

Oyewale confirmed the petitioners were not exclusively associated with Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), emphasizing the EFCC's duty to protect all individuals who report potential wrongdoing. He further assured that VDM would be released once he fulfilled his bail conditions, and the case would be brought to court promptly.

The arrest of VDM sparked outrage on social media, with renowned Nigerian musicians David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, and Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, better known as Skales, joining the calls for his release.

Davido, on his social media handle, expressed his support for VDM and called for his freedom. He commended the united voice demanding VDM's release as a powerful statement from the youth. Davido's post ended with the hashtag #FREEVDM, which gained significant traction on social media platforms.

Skales chimed in by urging the youth to be wise and stand up for their rights. He also encouraged Nigerian youths to consider boycotting GTB, though no direct connection between the bank and VDM's case has been established.

Although the specific nature of the allegations against VDM is yet to be made public, concerns about the EFCC's handling of the situation and the need for accountability have been raised. VDM affirmed that the EFCC still holds his mobile phone and has logged him out of his iCloud account, potentially giving access to sensitive materials like videos and evidence.

Amidst the ongoing debates, VDM was released after approximately five days in custody. The demand for the EFCC to present clear charges related to his case persists, shedding light on the need for transparency in such situations. The arrest and release of VDM bring forth a significant discussion about the employed tactics of the EFCC in Nigeria and the importance of upholding the rule of law.
