Financial Backing Continues for Suspect Athlete Despite Triple-Month Performance-Enhancing Drug Suspension

Jannik Sinner's Journey to the French Open

The young tennis phenom, Jannik Sinner, struts onto the Roland Garros court as a force to be reckoned with, raking in support from bookies and sponsors alike, alongside up-and-coming legend Carlos Alcaraz. Sharing the limelight, they've bagged the last five Grand Slams between them.

Backing Sinner's world-topping reign is a solid crew of sponsors, even after a recent three-month suspension for doping that sparked pandemonium in the tennis world.

A mere nine months ago, Sinner's name was diluted, thanks to a pair of positive tests for clostebol, an anabolic steroid. However, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) attributed the incident to his physiotherapist using a healing spray laced with clostebol on Sinner's hand before treatment.

Some sponsors questioned the partnership in the aftermath, but Rolex and Lavazza affirmed their commitment to Sinner. Adding to his brand portfolio, Sinner has been promoting various brands on his Instagram, including Nike, Lavazza, Head, De Cecco, and L'Oreal's La Roche Posay.

Marco Lavazza, vice chairman of coffee maker Lavazza, remained firm in his support, stating, "Like everyone else, we were shocked by the news. But we realized it was a freak event ... I have no doubts about who Jannik Sinner is."

Despite the doping scandal, Sinner's career continued unbroken. He's earned his way into seven straight finals this year, with five wins to his name, including victories at the U.S. Open and Australian Open. Leading Italy to its second consecutive Davis Cup title, Sinner now stands among the tennis greats.

Reigning as the world's top-ranked player for a record 50 straight weeks, Sinner's award winnings are substantial, raking in over $52 million in 2024, placing him at No. 43 in Sportico's list of highest-earning athletes.

While Sinner's accomplishments shine bright, they cast a stark contrast to the fate of Maria Sharapova, who faced a two-year suspension after testing positive for meldonium in 2016. Unlike Sinner, Sharapova faced the wrath of sponsors, with several, including Nike and Tag Heuer, temporarily severing ties.

Refuting Sharapova's camp's claims of no fault or negligence, some players on the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) sent a letter to tennis' governing bodies, accusing the processes of being "broken."

Nevertheless, Sinner's tenacity and resilience on the court have proven that he's more than just a number on a rankings list. He parted ways with his longtime agent in March, signifying a new chapter in his career and brand alliances.
