Filmmaker Woody Allen Declares Cancel Culture as Unintelligent: "If an Actor Refuses to Collaborate with Me, They're Committing a Significant Error"
Woody Allen Promotes First Novel Amidst Hollywood Shunning
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, director Woody Allen discussed his first-ever book, "What's With Baum," which is set to hit the shelves. The novel, Allen's foray into the world of literature, shares striking similarities with aspects of his own life.
The main character, Asher Baum, is a middle-aged Jewish journalist turned failed playwright turned middling novelist. Baum's wife, Connie, bears an uncanny resemblance to Allen's former partner Mia Farrow. Similarly, the novel's rocky third marriage, alluring younger women, and career-ending blunders echo Allen's own experiences.
However, the interview also touched upon the allegations that have plagued Allen's career. In 1992, he was accused of molestation by his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, an incident that occurred in Farrow's Connecticut home when Dylan was just 7 years old.
Dylan Farrow has maintained that the assault is a truth she reported as a child and has consistently recounted since. Allen, on the other hand, has repeatedly denied these allegations.
The novel's character, Thane, echoes Allen's descriptions of Farrow's relationship with her sons Fletcher and Ronan. This has led to speculation about the novel's connection to the allegations.
Allen has expressed his thoughts on the current culture of "cancel culture," stating it is "just dumb." He also shared that he does not get angry about being shunned by others, including actors like Michael Caine, Drew Barrymore, Colin Firth, Kate Winslet, among others, who have publicly refused to work with him in recent years.
Despite being dropped by his original publisher, just like his character Baum, Allen's book was initially rejected but eventually found a home with a new publisher. The novel was originally published by Viking Press before Allen rejected it.
Dylan Farrow has stated that she is sick and tired of the narrative suggesting she was coached or brainwashed. She maintains that her account of the incident is based on her personal truth.
As Allen promotes his first novel, the conversation around his career and the allegations against him continues to be a topic of discussion. "What's With Baum" is set to be released soon, offering a glimpse into the life of a character that shares many similarities with its creator.
