Filmmaker Patty Jenkins Declares Return to Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Project

In a less-than-ideal reality, Patty Jenkins' latest flick, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, appears to be making yet another comeback, despite initially stalling out. Announced back in 2020 for a 2023 release, the film was set to be an action-packed Star Wars adventure focusing on daring Rebel pilots—brought to us by the director who's previously given us films like Monster and Wonder Woman.

The project, however, failed to gain sufficient behind-the-scenes traction. After a series of rumors, Disney took the movie off the release schedule in late 2022, leading many to believe it was effectively dead in the water. But then, a curveball! In a recent interview, Jenkins herself announced that she's back in the Star Wars mix.

During an appearance on the Talking Pictures podcast, Jenkins stated, "I am now back on doing Rogue Squadron...We'll see what happens. We need to develop and get it to where we're both super happy with it." Lucasfilm has yet to confirm this news, so we reached out for comment but are still waiting on a response. Fingers crossed!

Discussing her journey, Jenkins mentioned a different mega-franchise she'd been working on that derailed her Star Wars plans. "So, when I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3," Jenkins explained, "I thought maybe I'll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3." Following the aforementioned complications, Lucasfilm and Jenkins finalized a deal for her to deliver a script draft. Now, she's working on just that, with the goal of making everyone involved thrilled about the final product.

As for when this podcast was recorded, who knows? But regardless of how long ago it might have been, it's surely a significant update considering previous assumptions that Rogue Squadron was as good as gone. Although Jenkins' script draft has been commissioned, whether or not Lucasfilm will like it remains to be seen. Only time (and Jenkins' talent) will tell if Rogue Squadron takes off or tumbles to the Dark Side once more.

For now, it's clear that the next Star Wars movie will be The Mandalorian and Grogu. Beyond that, it's anybody's guess. Perhaps a Rey flick? We'll just have to wait and see.
