Filmmaker Alex Garland to pen and direct the live-action adaptation of video game 'Elden Ring' produced by A24.
In an exciting development for fans of epic fantasy and video game adaptations, A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment have announced a feature film adaptation of the critically acclaimed Elden Ring. The highly anticipated project will be helmed by award-winning writer and director Alex Garland, known for his work on Ex Machina and Annihilation.
Set in the vast and mysterious Lands Between, Elden Ring follows players on a journey to repair the titular Elden Ring-runes that control reality and become the new Elden Lord. This action-packed adventure, filled with horseback riding and dying (a common theme in FromSoftware's games), promises to deliver an immersive and thrilling cinematic experience.
George R.R. Martin, the creator of Game of Thrones, is among the producers of the Elden Ring film adaptation, along with Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Vince Gerardis, and the game's director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, who expressed openness to a film adaptation if the "right partner" was involved.
While details about the release date are yet to be announced, Elden Ring was one of the biggest games of 2022, with players eagerly diving into its intricate world after becoming familiar with FromSoftware's work. The base game and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion are planned to release on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025.
In addition to the movie adaptation, FromSoftware is also working on a standalone multiplayer-focused spinoff for Elden Ring called Nightreign, a separate project that promises to further expand the Elden Ring universe.
As A24 continues to make waves with their unique and thought-provoking films, the Elden Ring movie seems to be in capable hands. With Garland at the helm and the involvement of Martin and Miyazaki, fans can expect a faithful adaptation that stays true to the game's dark fantasy roots.
