Filming commences for Greta Gerwig's adaptation of 'Narnia' in the United Kingdom, under the oversight of Netflix
Greta Gerwig's highly-anticipated film adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician's Nephew commenced production in August 2025, primarily in London and at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, UK.
After some initial delays, filming officially started on location in the City of London, featuring period-set scenes that blend 1940s–1950s Britain, including street scenes with era-appropriate vehicles and extras. This production is a high-budget Netflix and IMAX project, with a reported budget exceeding $200 million.
The film, which is part of Netflix’s planned reboot of the Narnia film series, is set to encompass up to six movies, with this installment slated for a two-week exclusive IMAX theatrical run in November 2026 before streaming on Netflix starting December 25, 2026.
The cast includes Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep, with Streep reportedly voicing Aslan. The story of the film centers on two children who are sent into a magical world where they find Aslan and witness the creation of Narnia.
This production marks a return of large-scale high-fantasy production to the UK and Ireland, leveraging local studios and period-accurate cityscapes for the backdrop of C.S. Lewis’s beloved novels. The filming in London follows Gerwig's 2023 mega hit Barbie, which was shot at Warner Bros Leavesden and went on to gross over $1.4bn at the box office.
Netflix first acquired the rights to Lewis's books in 2018 and confirmed Gerwig as writer-director in 2020. The last screen adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia was produced and distributed by Disney between 2005 and 2010. Amy Pascal is producing the film adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia.
The filming for the movie is primarily taking place at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, and some location shooting for the film has already occurred in central London. The Chronicles of Narnia film is set to hit Netflix during the holiday season in the year 2026.
