Film "Triangle of Sadness" triumphs amidst awards competition
The European Film Awards 2022, a celebration of the finest achievements in European cinema, took place in Eldborg Harpa, Iceland, and was broadcast live in 24 countries. The event, held every two years, honoured some of the most exceptional films, directors, and actors from across the continent.
The main prize, the Best European Film, was awarded to "Triangle of Sadness," a satirical comedy-drama directed by Ruben Östlund. The film, which also won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, was a clear winner, taking home four awards in total. Östlund was also honoured with the Best Director award and the Best Screenwriter award for his thought-provoking script.
"Triangle of Sadness" was not the only film to receive recognition. Anatomy of a Fall, directed by Justine Triet, was nominated for the Best Film award. The film, which won several other accolades, including the César Award for Best Film, also received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations.
Three filmmakers were awarded honorary European Film of the Year awards: Elia Suleiman, Margarethe von Trotta, and Marco Bellocchio. Suleiman, a Palestinian director, made history by becoming the first Palestinian to receive the European Achievement in World Cinema Award.
The European Commission was given the Prix Film4Climate award for their European Green Deal climate project. The award recognises initiatives that use film and audiovisual media to raise awareness about climate change.
In the comedy category, the Spanish "dramedy" El buen Patrón took the award. Laura Samani's first feature-length film, "Piccolo corpo" (A small body), won the Fipresci-award.
The awards ceremony also recognised short films, with Urska Djukic and Émilie Pigeard taking home the award for their film Granny's Sexual Life.
In a show of solidarity, all Ukrainian film producers were awarded the Eurimage Co-Production Award. The awards were presented by Ilmur Kristjánsdóttir and Hugleikur Dagsson.
The European Film Awards are considered the most prestigious awards in European cinema, and this year's ceremony was no exception. The event highlighted the diverse and innovative talent that the European film industry has to offer.
