New Line Cinema Embraces Horror Genre with Focus on Iconic Franchises and Fresh Content

New Line Cinema, the alternative filmmaking arm of Warner Bros., is making a significant push into the horror genre, as revealed by President and Chief Creative Officer, Richard Brener. The company is known for producing franchise makers and arthouse staples, and their latest focus is on horror films, particularly major franchises like "The Conjuring" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street."

According to Brener, the success of horror movies has led to the company's increased investment in this genre. New Line Cinema's current horror master in residence is James Wan, who is producing the ninth film in the Conjuring universe, titled The Conjuring: Last Rites.

Regarding future horror projects, the company is moving toward the final installment of the Conjuring series, planned for release in 2025, indicating New Line's intent to conclude this popular series with a major film event. For "A Nightmare on Elm Street," New Line is preparing to spotlight the franchise through remastered theatrical screenings of all six original films in 4K quality during August and September 2025.

In addition to these franchises, New Line is linked with upcoming horror projects involving prominent horror creatives like Gary Dauberman and David Yarovesky. Dauberman, known for his work on "The Conjuring" series, is developing several new horror movies through his production company, although these projects fall under different banners rather than directly under New Line.

The Conjuring: Last Rites will see the return of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren. The film is set to be a wrap-up of sorts for the current phase of the Conjuring universe. New Line is proud of the film "Companion," directed by Drew Hancock, and would like to work with Hancock again.

The company's focus on horror films does not mean they have abandoned other genres. Brener stated that the budgets, expectations, and pressure for making movies have not significantly changed. New Line is trying to navigate the pressure to find a balance between franchise films and original films.

Examples of their properties include "Nightmare on Elm Street," "The Mask," "Austin Powers," "Mortal Kombat," "Seven," "Lord of the Rings," "Elf," and "The Conjuring." Solid horror films often find their audience over time, as demonstrated by past films like "Dark City," "Spawn," and "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me."
