Robert Redford, the iconic actor, director, and philanthropist, was born on August 18, 1936, in Van Nuys, California. His journey to stardom began in the 1960s, and his career spanned over six decades, leaving an indelible mark on the film industry.
Redford's film debut was in the 1960 romantic comedy "Tall Story." However, it was his portrayal of the Sundance Kid in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" that earned him international recognition. His other memorable performances include roles in "The Sting," "The Way We Were," "All the President's Men," and "The Natural."
In addition to his acting prowess, Redford also proved himself to be a talented director. He directed the films Quiz Show and The Horse Whisperer in the 1990s. He was an Academy Award-winning filmmaker, having directed "Ordinary People," "A River Runs Through It," and "Quiz Show."
In 1981, Redford founded the non-profit Sundance Institute, named after his iconic character from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." The Institute offers programs and grants to aspiring filmmakers. In 1985, the Institute acquired the US Film Festival and renamed it the Sundance Film Festival, which has since become a significant platform for independent filmmakers.
Redford was not just a figure in the film industry but also an outspoken supporter of progressive politics, civil rights, and environmentalism. He received the National Medal of the Arts from President Bill Clinton in 1996 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama in 2016.
The National Audubon Society awarded Robert Redford the Audubon Medal, their highest honour, in 1989. In recognition of his lifetime of work, he received an honorary Oscar in 2002. His achievements were further honoured when he was recognised by the Kennedy Center Honors in 2005.
Robert Redford was married twice, first to producer and activist Lola Van Wagenen, and later to artist Sibylle Szaggars. He had four children, one of whom died in infancy.
