Cannes Film Fest Jury Weighs In

Film festival head Juliette Binoche states that Donald Trump is trying to salvage his image through film tariffs, asserting that he's waging a battle.

Juliette Binoche, heading the jury of this year's Cannes Film Festival, hit out at US President Donald Trump's controversial announcement of 100% tariffs on foreign films. In a candid conversation with journalists in the French Riviera, she expressed her dismay over the move, likening it to Trump's relentless efforts to save himself and America.

Binoche's Take on Trump's Film Tariffs

"He's fighting tooth and nail to rescue America, and himself, no doubt," says the Oscar-winning actor, acknowledging the vibrant filmmaking community on the continent, specifically in Europe. "I'm at a loss for words regarding the tariff announcement," Binoche confesses.

The jury, which includes stars like Halle Berry and Jeremy Strong, will be selecting the Palme d'Or award winner.

Strong's Perspective on Film's Role Under Trump

Jeremy Strong, renowned for his role in the HBO series Succession, turned the spotlight on the importance of film under Trump's presidency. He viewed his jury membership as a counterbalance to his portrayal of Trump's mentor Roy Cohn in last year's Cannes competition film The Apprentice.

"Roy Cohn, in my opinion, was the architect of fake news and alternative facts," says Strong. "We're living with the repercussions of what he started."

Berry on Potential female Bond and Jinx Spin-off

In a separate note, Halle Berry, known for her role as Jinx in the James Bond film Die Another Day, ruled out a return to the spy franchise following Amazon's MGM Studio's creative control deal. Berry also dismissed the notion of a Jinx spin-off, questioning whether it was the right move in 2025.

"It's fine to say, 'She should be a woman,' in 2025, but I'm not entirely sure it's the best thing to do," she states.

A Global Concern

Trump's film tariff proposal, as well as the broader international film community, has raised concerns about the potential economic, cultural, and geopolitical ramifications of such a move. The proposed tariffs risk damaging relationships between nations, shrinking the diversity of films, and hindering the cultural exchange so crucial to the arts and cinema.

The Cannes Film Festival stands as a symbol of transnational artistic collaboration, thriving on exchange and understanding in the global film industry. The jury's and industry's views, amidst the shadow cast by Trump's announcement, underscore the importance of collaboration, diversity, and mutual respect in art and culture.
