Get ready, Tolkien fans! A new tales of the fantastical realm is heading your way. According to industry gossip rag "Variety", Warner Bros. is set to unleash "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" (Ger: "Die Jagd nach Gollum") on the silver screen on December 17, 2027—just in time for the festive movie season, keeping in line with the previous films' tradition.
Andy Serkis Returns with a Double Act
The one and only Andy Serkis (61), known for his portrayal of the harrowed Gollum using motion-capture technology since "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" in 2002, will not only don his role once more but also step into the director's chair. Serkis has several directing credits under his belt, including "Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle" and "Venom: Let There Be Carnage".
The film's initial release date was slated for 2026, but unfortunately, the movie's commencement, set to be unveiled in summer 2024, has been delayed by a year.
Seek and Ye Shall Find
While details about the plot have been scooped, Philippa Boyens, a producer who worked on the original trilogy alongside Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, spilled the beans to "Empire" magazine that "The Hunt for Gollum" offers an intense narrative that unfolds between "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings". Boyens described it as "an incredible, untold story" told from Gollum's perspective, hinting at a glimpse into the lost events unfolding in the War of the Ring.
The trio of Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens will also produce this film, with Warner Bros. stressing their involvement in every stage of the production process.
Familiar Faces Might Appear
Tolkien diehards might be in for a treat if the storylines align, as stars like Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) have all expressed interest in returning. No official confirmation regarding additional actors has been announced just yet.
With "The Hunt for Gollum", Warner Bros. continues the successful journey through Middle-earth. Both the "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" trilogies grossed around $2.9 billion worldwide each. The franchise was most recently seen on the big screen in December 2024 with the anime film "The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of the Rohirrim" (2024). "The Hunt for Gollum" marks the first live-action film in the "Lord of the Rings" universe since "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" in 2014.

In other news, Warner Bros. has revealed upcoming release dates for other projects: The next instalment of the "Evil Dead" franchise, featuring Souheila Yacoub, drops on July 24, 2026, while M. Night Shyamalan's "Remain", starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, and Ashley Walters, is set to premiere on October 23, 2026.
