Let's Dive into Ryan Coogler's Groundbreaking Film, "Sinners" 🎬

Ryan Coogler, the visionary mind behind "Black Panther", is shaking things up with his newest cinematic offering, "Sinners". And folks, let me tell ya, it's generating more buzz than a swarm of bees!

This is all thanks to a 10-minute video shared by Kodak a few days before the film's release. On YouTube and TikTok, it's racked up close to a million views. In this video, Coogler drops some serious knowledge bombs about topics like aspect ratios, film formats, and sound design, making these complex concepts accessible and fun as a truckload of candy!

Coogler is in his element as he discusses various film formats, with visual aids like film strips of different sizes and a whiteboard covered in detailed sketches. His passion is palpable as he begins with a quick rundown of Super 8mm film, Super 16mm film, and some tech jargon.

Regarding shooting on actual celluloid - which is increasingly rare in today's digital and video-centric world - he says, "It's a format I fell in love with when I was in film school, so I brought a few film strips here". The director also mentions other notable recent movies that were shot on film, such as Oscar-winners "Anora" and "The Brutalist".

After explaining the basics, Coogler delves into the unique approach he and his team took for "Sinners". They used two camera systems: Ultra Panavision 70 and IMAX. Ultra Panavision 70 is the widest format available, while IMAX is the tallest. Ultra Panavision will crop the screen along the top and bottom, and IMAX will crop on the left and right sides, Coogler explains.

"Sinners" is a paranormal tale set in Mississippi, where Coogler's longtime collaborator Michael B. Jordan plays twin brothers Smoke and Stack in their hometown. The film first hits theaters nationwide this coming Friday.

But here's where things get really interesting. "Sinners" is the first movie ever to be shot simultaneously in two different aspect ratios (as described above), and it's also the first time a movie has been released that combines both. Coogler specified all this in the Kodak clip. Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who also worked on "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever", also made history as the first woman to shoot a theatrical feature film on both 65mm and IMAX.

Due to this innovative approach, "Sinners" will be available in several formats. Some showings will shift between aspect ratios depending on the emotion and intensity of a scene in select theaters - another first in film history!

Coogler hasn't shot on film since his breakout "Fruitvale Station" from 2013, but his return to the medium is about more than achieving a shallow depth of field and high resolution. He wanted to create a theatrical experience like the ones he grew up with, reminiscing about the days when going to the movies was the most affordable way for his working-class family in Oakland to have a good time.

So there you have it, folks. "Sinners" opens this Friday in theaters nationwide. It's distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, which, like CNN, is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. Get ready for an unforgettable cinematic experience! 🌟🚀
