Film director James Gunn suggests Margot Robbie may reprise her role as Harley Quinn in a potential future project.
Margot Robbie, the acclaimed actress who brought Harley Quinn to life in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), has shared her thoughts about the film version of the DC universe and the character she made iconic.
In an interview with an unspecified outlet, Robbie compared the DC universe to the comics, suggesting that individual movies have their own storylines, much like the source material. She expressed her enthusiasm for revisiting the role of Harley Quinn, stating that the character is "a fun one to revisit" and that she loves playing her.
However, Robbie clarified that she has not been asked yet to reprise her role in the new DC Universe (DCU), a soft reboot with new casting and storylines. Despite her enthusiasm, she confirmed she has heard nothing from DC Studios or James Gunn about returning as Harley Quinn and seems to have moved on for now.
James Gunn, who serves as CEO and co-chairman of DC, has shown interest in bringing Idris Elba's character Bloodsport back in an upcoming DC movie. Gunn made these statements during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, but did not discuss specific details about Margot Robbie's return as Harley Quinn.
Robbie played Harley Quinn in three major DC movies: Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021). However, the future of her character in the DC film universe remains uncertain, with Gunn stating "That will be revealed down the line."
Robbie expressed a need for a break from portraying Harley Quinn in 2021, and during the interview, she did not discuss any other DC characters. The interview with Gunn focused on his plans for DC movies, specifically Bloodsport and Harley Quinn.
Robbie believes that the individual movies in the DC film universe work well, similar to the comics. She stated that the DC universe is not as linearly linked as the Marvel universe, suggesting a more independent approach to storytelling.
For now, fans will have to wait and see if Robbie will return as Harley Quinn in the DCU. As Gunn continues to shape the DC film universe, it's clear that there are exciting times ahead for DC fans.
