Film Director David Zucker expresses enthusiasm about upcoming 'Naked Gun' revival

David Zucker, the director of the original Naked Gun film, has shared his thoughts about the upcoming reboot, which stars Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson. Despite his overall positive sentiments towards the project, Zucker has chosen to distance himself from the reboot.

In a recent interview, Zucker revealed that he declined an executive producer credit on the 2025 reboot. He explained that he was excluded from the creative process and disagreed with the direction taken, favoring a different concept involving Frank Drebin’s son in a spy-themed spoof.

Zucker, who is known for his work on Airplane!, The Naked Gun, and Top Secret, appreciates the call from producer Seth MacFarlane but has not seen the new reboot. He jokingly stated that the executive producer credit would only have covered a few electric bills after agents and managers took their share.

Despite not being involved in the reboot, Zucker believes the success of the reboot is a good omen for the comedy genre and spoof in particular. He hopes the buzz surrounding the reboot will help generate interest in his own work.

Currently, Zucker is working on his own projects, including a new indie film titled Star of Malta, set in 1949 with a film noir style and a $10 million budget. He describes it as "spoof 2.0," aiming for a believable story with a young cast and a disciplined approach to comedy.

In addition to Star of Malta, Zucker has launched a 15-episode web series called Master Crash: A Crash Course In Spoof Comedy. The series teaches Zucker's 15 rules for writing parody, emphasizing the importance of believable stories and disciplined comedy writing.

Zucker believes there is a strong market for comedy in movie theaters and that spoof in particular is well-received by audiences. He started the reboot's production process by telling MacFarlane how much he loved his previous work, but Zucker won't take credit for anything he didn't work on from the beginning.

Zucker has texted director Akiva Schaffer to offer his congratulations on the reboot's success. Although he won't be watching the reboot, Zucker's positive sentiments towards the project are clear. He may not be involved in the reboot, but his influence on the comedy genre continues to be felt.
