Renowned filmmaker Baz Luhrmann unveils a new Elvis Presley project, three years after the success of his acclaimed rock 'n' roll biopic

Renowned Australian director Baz Luhrmann has announced an exciting new project centered on Elvis Presley, following the global success of his celebrated 2022 biopic about the King of Rock 'n' Roll.

On Friday, Luhrmann, 62, shared a post on social media revealing plans for a new Elvis Presley documentary, showcasing never-before-seen footage of the late singer. In his post, Luhrmann stated, "During the making of ELVIS, we embarked on a search for rumored unseen footage from the iconic 1970s concert films, That's The Way It Is and Elvis on Tour."

He continued to disclose that, with the help of researchers, they uncovered 68 boxes of film negatives and unseen 8mm footage tucked away in the Warner Bros. film vaults hidden beneath salt mines. The footage, which reportedly includes unheard recordings of Elvis discussing his life and music, paved the way for EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert. As the filmmaker explained, "As the journey of creating this film continues, I sincerely can't wait to share it with you all!"

While further details about the never-before-seen footage remain under wraps, the documentary is expected to offer a fresh perspective on Elvis's concerts, using historical footage to create an epic cinematic experience. No official trailer has been released, but the title and announcement have generated excitement amongst fans. The project was revealed at a Sony event, with Luhrmann showing glimpses of the forthcoming film, keeping anticipation high[3].

Luhrmann is renowned for his blend of modern style and older music and aesthetics in his films[1][2]. His Elvis biopic grossed a whopping $288 million (AU$449 million) worldwide, making it Australia's second-biggest film opening ever, only behind The Great Gatsby, also directed by Luhrmann[5].

At the time of the film's release, Hugh Jackman praised newcomer Austin Butler's portrayal of Presley, saying Butler "crushed it" in the role[6]. Butler's portrayal of the King of Rock 'n' Roll has already catapulted him to international fame. Prior to the Elvis biopic, Butler, now 31, had a small role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
