Film Critique: Him Struggles With a Powerful Concept

In the world of cinema, a new horror-sport hybrid is set to make its debut. Directed by Justin Tipping and produced by Jordan Peele, 'Him' is scheduled for release on September 19, 2025.

The film, rated R by the Motion Picture Association for its strong violent content, language, sexual material, nudity, and drug use, promises to be a unique take on the football genre. 'Him' aspires to be more than just a horror version of the 2015 movie 'Concussion'. Instead, it delves into the religious fervor associated with the sport.

The story revolves around a character named Cameron 'Cam' Cade, who idolizes a quarterback named Isaiah White. As a boy, Cam witnesses White winning a game with a highlight-reel play that also results in a career-threatening injury. Years later, Cam is offered a week-long training opportunity at Isaiah White's Texas desert compound by a mysterious group known as The Saviors.

The training week is less a boot camp and more a disorienting psychodrama, resembling a football ayahuasca. Cam is subjected to grisly pocket-passing drills, blood transfusions, and unknown serums, all while navigating a surreal and hallucinatory atmosphere.

The movie attempts to bring a dark, satirical perspective to football, but the narrative becomes increasingly tedious. It feels like a gladiator movie that forgets the Colosseum, evading the football world of arenas, screaming fans, and broadcasters.

Despite the gruelling training, Cam pushes forward, driven by the desire to be the greatest of all time (GOAT). Isaiah White, despite a career-threatening injury, has won multiple championships in the league, and he pushes Cam to extremes to test if he has what it takes.

However, the journey is not without its dangers. Cam sustains a head injury, adding a new risk to his football playing. At a later point in the movie, Cam is struck in the head by a strange pagan spirit-slash-mascot while practicing alone at night.

The review for 'Him' awards one and a half stars out of four. While it may not be a blockbuster hit, it certainly promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of the darker side of football and the fanaticism it breeds.
