Film actor Simon Pegg suggests that Paramount's new management, who are reportedly ardent Star Trek enthusiasts, may lead to the long-awaited production of Star Trek 4: "It's high time, I think."
In the world of Star Trek, the much-anticipated fourth instalment of the reboot series, Star Trek 4, remains in development following Paramount's acquisition by Skydance Media [1]. However, its production status remains uncertain with no fixed release date.
Originally set to begin production in 2022 under the direction of Matt Shakman, known for his work on The Fantastic Four, the new movie is described as an "origin story" set "decades before" the events of the reboot [1]. Chris Pine, who plays Captain Kirk, has not seen any scripts for Star Trek 4 as of 2023 [2].
Steve Yockey was tasked with writing the script for Star Trek 4 in 2024 [1]. Meanwhile, Simon Pegg, who played Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott, has suggested that there might be changes to Star Trek 4 following Paramount's acquisition by Skydance [3].
While the future of Star Trek 4 is uncertain, other Star Trek projects are in the works. J.J. Abrams, producer of the reboot series, is still involved, and Pine, along with other original cast members, are in negotiations [1]. Paramount is also developing a new film with new characters, directed by Toby Haynes and written by Seth Grahame-Smith, separate from the rebooted cast [1].
On the small screen, production on the television series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is active, with the fifth and final season planned for 2027 [4]. However, there are rumours that Skydance/Paramount may consider winding down the franchise or even selling it after these planned seasons, suggesting some uncertainty about future directions [2].
Despite these uncertainties, David Ellison, the new Paramount chairman and a big Star Trek fan, could potentially push the new movie forward [1]. The last time the Star Trek cast was seen together was in 2016's Star Trek: Beyond, where Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldaña, among others, were last seen [5].
Tragically, Anton Yelchin, who played Pavel Chekov, passed away in 2016 at the age of 27 [6]. Simon Pegg has expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with the Star Trek cast despite Yelchin's death [7].
Looking ahead, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is premiering in early 2026, and new series pitches like Star Trek: Year One following Strange New Worlds are being prepared for pitch to Skydance/Paramount executives [3]. The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is now out, and there are new Star Trek TV shows coming soon.
Star Trek: Beyond was the third film in the reboot series, following the 2009 film and the 2013 sequel Star Trek: Into Darkness. It's an exciting time for Star Trek fans, with multiple projects in various stages of development, even though the future of Star Trek 4 remains uncertain.
