Filipinas show grit in narrow loss to Australia at AFC Women's Asian Cup

The Philippine women's national football team, also known as the Filipinas, arrived in Australia on 2 March 2023 to compete in the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup. Their campaign began with a tough match against the hosts, where a strong defensive effort kept the score close until the final whistle.

The Filipinas faced Australia in their opening Group A fixture. Despite a solid performance, they lost 0-1, with goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel making key saves against shots from Stephanie Catley, Caitlin Foord, Clare Wheeler, Kyra Gorry, and Mary Fowler. The backline, led by Jessika Cowart, Hali Long, Sofia Wunsch, and Angela Beard, held firm for much of the game.

Coach Mark Torcaso later highlighted the team's resilience and the hard work they put in before the tournament. Their next challenge comes on 5 March 2023, when they take on South Korea in Gold Coast, Queensland.

This tournament follows the Filipinas' historic debut at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, marking their continued growth on the international stage.

The team now prepares for their second group match against South Korea. Their disciplined defence and goalkeeper's performance against Australia set a strong foundation for the rest of the competition. The result will determine their path forward in the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup.
