The Philippines' Billie Jean King Cup Squad Hits the Court Once More

Philippine tennis takes center stage as the nation's Billie Jean King Cup team, led by 19-year-old phenom Alex Eala, gears up for their return to international competition following a four-year hiatus.

After the Philippine men's team snatched a promotion to the Davis Cup's Group IV, it's the women's team's turn to shine, starting from November 25-27 at the Bahrain Tennis Club in Manama.

Eala, ranked highest among all players in the Asia Oceania Group III, will be joined by former Philippine No. 1 Marian Capadocia, Khim Iglupas, Shaira Rivera, and Denise Dy as head coach.

Iglupas, hailing from Iligan, and Rivera, a former Ateneo de Manila star, have both made a name for themselves in the United States, competing for the University of West Alabama varsity squad. Iglupas, an All-American honoree, ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II this year, while Rivera brings invaluable experience to the team.

The Philippines finds itself in Pool B, alongside Qatar, Nepal, and Guam. With clear guidance from Dy, the team aims to conquer Pool B and progress to the playoff for promotion against Pool C's top team, which includes host Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Laos, and Turkmenistan. The winner of this encounter will secure a promotion to Group II in 2025.

The Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) had been under suspension since December 2020 due to mismanagement issues. However, the ITF reinstated PHILTA earlier this year following leadership changes.

This comeback marks a historic moment for Philippine tennis and promises to excite fans eager to witness the team's triumph on the international stage.

The spotlight, meantime, has been shining on another rising Filipino tennis star, Alexandra Eala. Her impressive achievements in the tennis world have earned her recognition alongside other promising young players, but her participation in the Billie Jean King Cup team remains uncertain as of this writing.
