Fiji Prime Minister praised by Netanyahu as a 'soldier of peace'
In a significant move, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel welcomed the official dedication ceremony of the Fijian Embassy in Jerusalem. The ceremony, attended by Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Israel's Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Saar, marked a new chapter in the relationship between the two nations.
Netanyahu's speech highlighted the importance of the relationship between Israel and Fiji, emphasizing the shared values that bind the two countries. He praised Fiji for recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital and thanked them for their support.
Referring to Jerusalem as the 'City on the Hill,' Netanyahu reiterated the historical and spiritual significance of the city, stating that it has been Israel's capital for 3,000 years. He noted the symbolic timing of the embassy's inauguration, stating that seven is an important and symbolic number in their tradition.
Netanyahu commended Rabuka's background in peacekeeping and expressed appreciation for his efforts. He highlighted the deep cultural and moral ties between Israel and Fiji, stating that the idea of all human beings having the right to live and be free is a bedrock of their common faith and values.
Netanyahu also referred to a 'seven-front war' against groups opposing shared values. He emphasized the importance of standing together in the face of threats to these values, reiterating that they must work towards peace and prosperity for all.
The Fijian Embassy in Jerusalem is the seventh embassy to open in the city, following the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, and Kosovo. The U.S. embassy was inaugurated in 2018, while the opening of the Fijian embassy was announced in 2023.
Netanyahu personally welcomed the Fijian delegation at the event and expressed his commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. He referred to the embassy as 'our home, which is your home and the home of the people of Fiji.'
With this step, Israel and Fiji have taken their relationship to a new level, signaling a commitment to mutual respect, shared values, and cooperation in the face of global challenges.
