Figure Skating Team from Holy Cross Participates in MIT Figure Skating Classic Event

The Holy Cross Figure Skating Club made its mark in the competitive figure skating world last weekend, participating in its first-ever collegiate competition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This significant milestone marked the club's initial steps into regional or collegiate competitions, signifying an important chapter in the club’s competitive journey.

The competition environment at MIT was unlike any other, with teams cheering each other on and supporting each other throughout their events. The Holy Cross Figure Skating Club, a relatively recently established club at Holy Cross, has grown significantly in size since the outset of the academic year, with dozens of students taking shuttles to the Worcester Common on Saturday to enjoy an evening of ice skating with friends.

This year marked the first time the team had a coach, a budget, structured practices, and competitions. The team, led by Co-Captain Karina Myers '27, competed in a total of five events, including Pattern Dances, Team Maneuvers, and a Freestyle program. Despite some unanticipated difficulties, the team performed well, demonstrating their adaptability and commitment to growing stronger and showcasing their competitive potential.

Coach Annabelle Rie, '26, expressed her impression of the team’s performance, expressing hope and excitement for the next competition in March at the Pioneer Challenge Cup, hosted by Sacred Heart. Myers also shared her sentiment, stating that competing at MIT was a milestone for Holy Cross figure skating and reaffirming the team's commitment to continued growth and success.

The Pioneer Challenge Cup represents the Holy Cross Figure Skating Club's next major competition and an important opportunity to showcase progress and skill. While the exact details of the competition, including dates and outcomes, are not fully documented, the event appears to be a regional or collegiate figure skating competition, which aligns with Holy Cross's ongoing participation in competitive skating at that level.

As the team prepares for the Pioneer Challenge Cup, further information and updates can be found on Holy Cross College’s athletics or club sports web pages, direct club communications, or figure skating event archives. The Holy Cross community eagerly awaits the team's continued success and growth in the competitive figure skating world.
