Israel anthem played, stir caused by Swiss fencers - Fighters from Switzerland draw attention during the performance of Israel's national anthem

The award ceremony at the U23 Fencing European Championships in Tallinn was unexpectedly controversial. The Israeli national anthem played as the winners stepped onto the podium, but second-place finishers from Switzerland demonstratively turned away.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar's reaction was swift and sharp. He called out the Swiss team, claiming their behavior was "disrespectful" and a "disgrace" that showed a lack of sportsmanship and respect for the country they represent.

Swiss Fencers Clarify Actions

Four young Swiss fencers—Ian Hauri, Théo Brochard, Jonathan Fuhrimann, and Sven Vineis—have since spoken out, expressing their regret for their actions. On the Instagram page of their federation, they explained that their gesture had no political background and was simply born from their empathy for the civilian population suffering in the ongoing conflict between Israel and other parties.

Although they didn't elaborate further, it's believed they were referring to the Gaza conflict. They took responsibility for their actions, ap logging to their Israeli opponents and the Israeli Fencing Federation.

Swiss Federation Reacts

The swift reaction from the Swiss Federation came shortly after the event. They expressed their confusion and disappointment at the team's use of the award ceremony for a political demonstration. The importance of sports as a uniting force was emphasized, with discussions planned once the team returns from the tournament. Whether consequences will follow, despite the athletes' apology, remains to be seen.

The Israeli Fencing Federation also voiced their displeasure, stating that sport should bring people together, not divide them.
