Fifteen individuals detained for brutal gang assault, resulting in a 14-year-old girl losing her hand
In a significant development, the Thai police have announced the arrest of 15 suspects, including the primary suspect Sai Aik Maung, in connection with a brutal gang attack that took place in Chiang Mai's Mueang district on September 16.
The 24-year-old Myanmar national, Sai Aik Maung, was captured at the Mae Tha drug checkpoint in Lamphun province, where he was attempting to flee to Bangkok. Maung is the main suspect in the attack that left three students, including a 14-year-old girl, seriously injured, with the girl losing her hand.
The attack, which took place between Sept 17 and 18, has been a cause of concern for the police due to its potential to damage Thailand's tourism reputation. The arrests are part of new tourist safety initiatives launched by the police to ensure the safety of visitors.
According to Maung, the attack on the 14-year-old victim was due to mistaken identity. He confessed that he was unaware the victim was female, mistaking her for a male due to her hooded clothing. Maung used a machete during the late-night attack.
Maung, who has a history of violent incidents, including a previous machete attack in March, was previously arrested for drug-related offenses before being involved in the Chiang Mai attack. He was the primary suspect in an attack earlier this year as well.
The charges against the suspects include causing grievous bodily harm, criminal conspiracy involving five or more persons, and illegally carrying weapons in public.
The Deputy Commissioner General, Pol Lt Gen Prachuap Wongsuk, announced these arrests today. The police are taking these measures to ensure the safety of tourists and to protect Thailand's reputation as a safe tourist destination.
The authorities express their deepest sympathies to the victims and their families and assure the public that they are committed to bringing all those responsible for this heinous crime to justice.
