2030 FIFA World Cup Controversy: DFB Backs Away From 64-Team Proposal

FIFA's proposed World Cup plans face stern opposition from the German Football Association (DFB).

The football world is abuzz with a contentious proposal to expand the 2030 FIFA World Cup to 64 teams, a move championed by the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) for the centennial celebration. If implemented, this decision could guarantee a spot for all 10 CONMEBOL member countries.

However, not everyone is on board with this idea. The German Football Association (DFB) has vocalized its opposition to the 64-team proposal, with DFB president Bernd Neuendorf expressing serious reservations. Neuendorf believes this expansion would lead to "serious consequences for national leagues," extending the tournament phase and imposing an enormous physical strain on players.

While CONMEBOL champions this expansion as a means to boost global participation, other organizations have raised concerns. UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has labeled the proposal a "bad idea," criticizing its potential to weaken competition quality and devalue the qualifying process. Concacaf President Victor Montagliani shares Čeferin's apprehensions, pointing to the impact on the broader football ecosystem, including national teams, club competitions, and player workload.

Interestingly, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and Concacaf have also voiced their opposition to the proposal, despite Uruguay's stance as a co-host for the 2030 World Cup alongside various European countries. It remains to be seen how the Council will address these concerns when they convene again before the FIFA member associations' assembly.
