Leonie Fiebich, the WNBA star, has lambasted the German Basketball Federation for not doing enough to promote the Women's EuroBasket Championship starting tomorrow in Hamburg. "Bringing this tournament to Germany is a major coup, but when you look behind the curtains, the EuroBasket is not being promoted enough," Fiebich told the 'Süddeutsche Zeitung' in a candid interview. Come 2026, Berlin will host the entire World Cup.

With games against Sweden on Thursday (8:00 PM CET/MagentaSport), Spain on Friday, and Great Britain on Sunday, the action takes place at the Inselpark Arena, a compact venue accommodating about 2,400 spectators. "I've heard people are still clamoring for tickets, but they're all sold out. They should've planned better to cater to a larger audience," the 25-year-old stated.

An alternative in Hamburg would have been the Barclays Arena, capable of seating a whopping 16,000 spectators - not too shabby for a relatively fledgling women's basketball scene.

Fiebich spots a void in the festivities

So far, the hype in Hamburg fails to signal the presence of Europe's elite women's basketball team. "I'm keeping my fingers crossed to see if they'll up their game for the World Cup - but as of now, there's barely a whisper of the EuroBasket," Fiebich shares her concerns.

Despite the lack of fanfare surrounding the event, Fiebich remains focused on the courts. "That's not our priority now. We just aim for a strong performance and to secure a win on Thursday," she declared at the official media day, anticipating the pivotal opening game against Sweden. To make it to the knockout round in Piraeus, Germany must secure a top-two spot in their group.

Althoughthere is considerable coverage on team matchups and tournament schedules, no concrete reasons for a lack of promotion have been identified in the search results.

Common difficulties faced by women's sports events, such as lacklustre media coverage, inadequate marketing budgets, and competition from other events, could potentially explain Fiebich's remarks regarding insufficient promotion. However, without corroborating evidence, these suppositions remain speculative.
