Social Support in Thuringia: Limited Anonymous and Confidential Births
In the heart of Germany, Thuringia, the option of anonymous and confidential births has been in place for many years, serving as a safety net for pregnant women in crisis situations. While the occurrence may be rare, with an average of a few cases per year, it's essential to shed light on the resources available to these women.
According to the Thuringian Ministry of Social Affairs, since 2014, 26 babies have been brought into the world confidentially. During their initial days, these newborns' mothers are under medical supervision in hospitals, with their identities kept secret. Yet, once they turn 16, these young individuals can request information about their birth mothers.
Confidential births with pregnancy conflict counseling centers are regulated by a federal law that has been in effect for almost a decade. Sadly, as of now, the Ministry cannot provide any statistics on confidential births in Thuringia for the ongoing year.
Another aid for expectant mothers in need is the option of anonymous delivery at hospitals, introduced as a response to past instances of infanticide. Collecting any information from the mothers is not part of the procedure. After birth, the mothers relinquish their children to the youth welfare office. Since 2001, 88 children – 54 boys and 34 girls – have been born anonymously throughout the Free State, with four in 2022 and three in 2021.
In times of great distress, mothers may contemplate abandoning their newborn babies. To prevent such tragic situations, baby baskets or baby hatches are available at four hospitals in Thuringia – in Erfurt, Eisenach, Heiligenstadt, and Saalfeld. In fact, since 2001, 42 newborns – 18 boys and 24 girls – have been placed in these drop boxes. However, the Ministry is unsure if some mothers collect their children later, as no explicit records exist.
